What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a form of therapy.  In 1958 the American Medical Association (AMA) accepted Clinical Hypnosis as an adjunct to standard medical care. Most well-known for its effectiveness in helping with losing weight, quitting smoking, and fears/phobias, clinical and medical hypnosis has been found to help with over a thousand different ailments. Studies have shown that not only is it one of the best tools for changing habits, but it is also helping doctors and their patients make breakthroughs in pain, depression, anxiety, panic, addiction and so forth.

Hypnosis is a natural state of consciousness that combines deep comfortable relaxation, heightened, focused, and directed attention, plus an active sensory imagination. During the state of hypnosis, the body and the mind are in a relaxed and natural state, while the subconscious mind is very open and receptive to positive suggestions. This is where the full power of the mind can be accessed. 

Everyone naturally experiences the state of hypnosis on a daily basis. When you slide into that "not really awake yet not asleep" stage before dropping off to sleep at night, or before fully awakening in the morning – that is a hypnotic state. When you become totally absorbed in watching a movie and lose all sense of time, or when you realize that you just drove the last ten miles on the freeway on "auto-pilot"- these are also types of hypnotic states of mind.

What Is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis and inner imagery therapeutically for the purpose of achieving subconscious behavior modification. The conscious mind that we use daily as a tool, is actually only about 12% of our total mind, whereas the subconscious mind is a whopping 88%! The subconscious mind stores all our past experiences, thoughts, feelings, and learned behaviors. 

When we react to something in our environment, we think we are reacting with the conscious mind, but often what is happening is that something from our past is being triggered in our subconscious. As a result, we often over-react to things in the present, in emotional and fearful ways, and we don’t understand why we feel the way we do. 

Our subconscious mind is actually directing a lot of our actions, reactions, and feelings about who we are, what we are capable of, and what we deserve in life. Hypnotherapy is a way of accessing the subconscious and altering those old "tapes" and behaviors (often called our "life script") and replacing them with positive feelings and behaviors. 

In hypnosis, which is a state of deep relaxation with a focused mind, a "doorway" to the subconscious is opened. Then, this natural state of heightened suggestibility and receptivity allows you to absorb and accept new images of yourself, replace negative thinking with positive thoughts, and get in touch with your true inner resources and inner strengths. In this way, hypnotherapy is an extremely effective means for promoting and supporting changes in behaviors, attitudes, motivation, self-esteem and self-confidence. 

When a hypnotherapist, with your permission only, guides you into a hypnotic state for the purposes of facilitating the changes you are seeking, she is acting in partnership with you to harness the enormous power of your mind. Using hypnosis and imagery, you can begin to align your subconscious with your conscious desires and direct 100% of your mental power towards your personal goals.

We Can Learn to Be Happy

We all want to be happy. What I have noticed, though, is that many of us think happiness is a goal to be achieved. I believe that happiness is a lifestyle and a state of mind, not an end goal. 

Being happy is not the same as being happy about something. There will always be something we are not happy about. In fact, there will never be a time when we have "all our ducks in a row" and everything is "perfect". Everything changes in life - nothing stays the same. 

If we go through life saying "I’ll be happy when this happens" or "I’ll be happy when I get that", then we will never experience real happiness. The fulfillment of desires never makes anyone happy - it just creates new desires. Real happiness then remains perpetually just out of reach...because happiness is about how we feel inside. 

So much of what we feel about ourselves, about other people, and about life, has been based on what we have learned - what was taught to us in many subtle (and some not so subtle!) ways - taught to us by our families, authority figures in our lives, and by society. 

The wonderful thing is that we can have control over how we feel inside, because if we learned it, we can UN-learn it!  We can replace a lot of the negative messages with truly positive, healing, and renewing attitudes and understandings. We can discover what happiness means to us personally, and how we want to practice that. We can learn how to be happy as happiness is a choice
